Aerial thermal inspection has gone from a niche add-on to a standard line item on most commercial drone service contracts. Whether you’re inspecting a solar farm, a data center roof, or a stalled construction envelope, the sensor determines what you can actually sell the client.

Two Different Approaches, Not Two Competing Brands

DJI and FLIR aren’t really competing for the same job. DJI’s enterprise line integrates thermal sensors directly into a ready-to-fly airframe — you buy one system, and the thermal camera is already part of it. FLIR’s approach is built around dedicated thermal payload modules, often integrated by third-party manufacturers onto a variety of airframes, with a stronger pedigree in industrial and defense-grade thermal imaging specifically.

For most independent inspection operators, that difference matters more than any individual spec: an integrated DJI system is simpler to own and maintain as one unit, while a FLIR-based payload setup usually means more flexibility in choosing the airframe, at the cost of more moving parts to manage.

What Resolution Actually Buys You

Thermal resolution isn’t a vanity spec — it’s the difference between catching a defect and missing it. A 640×512 sensor resolves a meaningfully smaller hot spot from a given altitude than a 320×256 sensor. That directly changes how high you can fly and still reliably catch what the client is paying you to find, which in turn affects how much ground you can cover per flight. Higher resolution buys you either better detection at the same altitude, or the same detection ability from higher up — pick whichever matters more for the specific job.

Accuracy Matters More Than Marketing Numbers Suggest

Radiometric accuracy — how precisely the sensor measures actual temperature, not just relative hot/cold contrast — is what separates a report a client can act on from a pretty picture. For roofing and building envelope work specifically, you’re usually looking for temperature differentials of just a few degrees, so a sensor’s stated accuracy spec (commonly quoted in the ±2°C range for consumer-integrated systems, tighter for dedicated radiometric payloads) deserves more attention than the headline resolution number.

What to Actually Check Before Buying

Specs and pricing on both DJI’s and FLIR’s current lineups change often enough that any specific model recommendation here would likely be stale within months — check current enterprise dealer listings (B&H, Adorama, or manufacturer-authorized resellers) for what’s actually shipping today. What doesn’t change: match resolution and accuracy to the smallest defect size you need to reliably catch, not to whatever the top-of-line spec sheet advertises.
