New drone surveyors often treat LiDAR versus photogrammetry as an upgrade decision — as if LiDAR is simply the “better” option once you can afford it. That’s the wrong frame. They solve genuinely different problems, and plenty of established survey businesses run both, deployed for different jobs.
What Photogrammetry Actually Does
Photogrammetry builds a 3D model by stitching together overlapping photographs, using the shift in each object’s position across frames to calculate depth — the same underlying principle as human stereo vision, applied across hundreds of images. It’s mature, well-supported by mainstream software, and produces excellent results on open, hard-surfaced terrain: rooftops, stockpiles, road corridors, construction progress tracking.
Its core limitation is vegetation. Photogrammetry can only reconstruct surfaces the camera can actually see — it cannot see through tree canopy to the ground beneath it.
What LiDAR Does Differently
LiDAR fires pulsed laser light and measures the time each pulse takes to return, building a 3D point cloud directly from those measurements rather than inferring depth from images. Critically, a single laser pulse can register multiple returns — the first bouncing off a treetop, a later one passing through gaps to the actual ground. That’s what lets LiDAR produce usable bare-earth terrain models even under moderate tree cover, which photogrammetry structurally cannot do.
The Decision, Simplified
If the survey area is open and hard-surfaced — parking lots, rooftops, stockpile volumetrics, construction sites — photogrammetry is usually the more cost-effective choice, and the RGB imagery it captures alongside the 3D model is itself a deliverable clients value. If the job involves any meaningful vegetation — forestry, powerline corridors, pipeline right-of-way, terrain mapping in wooded areas — LiDAR is close to mandatory, not a nice-to-have upgrade.
The Practical Middle Ground
Many survey operations end up running both: a photogrammetry-focused platform for open-site work where clients also want high-resolution imagery, and a LiDAR-equipped system reserved for vegetated or corridor-mapping contracts where photogrammetry simply can’t deliver a usable bare-earth model. If you’re choosing your first system and most of your pipeline is open-site work, start with photogrammetry — it’s the more broadly useful tool for a wider range of first contracts, and LiDAR becomes the easier upsell once a client’s project specifically requires it.
