“Shahed drone” gets used as a catch-all term, but it actually describes an expanding family of distinct aircraft with meaningfully different capabilities, roles, and guidance systems. Understanding the lineup matters, because the newest variants represent genuine design evolution, not simply more of the same airframe.

The Baseline: Shahed-136 and Shahed-131

The Shahed-136 is the variant most people picture when they hear the name — a delta-wing loitering munition launched from angled racks mounted on trucks or trailers, requiring no runway or prepared airbase, navigating via satellite positioning and onboard inertial guidance to a pre-programmed target. It first demonstrated its strategic relevance publicly in the 2019 Abqaiq-Khurais attacks on Saudi oil infrastructure, and became globally familiar after 2022, when large numbers were transferred to Russia and redesignated Geran-2 for sustained use against Ukrainian infrastructure. The smaller Shahed-131 shares the same basic design philosophy at a reduced scale.

The Newest Evolution: Going Electric

In March 2026, analysts identified a new electric-propulsion variant of the Shahed-101, using battery power instead of the small piston engines that give earlier Shahed models their distinctive engine drone. Guidance Is Getting More Sophisticated Too

The newest turbojet-powered variant, the Shahed-238, reportedly offers a choice of guidance packages — satellite navigation, electro-optical terminal guidance, or radar-homing — the latter suited specifically to suppression-of-enemy-air-defense missions, where the drone homes in on an active radar emission rather than a fixed pre-programmed coordinate. That’s a meaningfully different mission profile than the original Shahed-136’s simple point-to-point strike, and it reflects an active, iterating weapons program rather than a single design being produced unchanged at scale.

What the Product Line Says About the Manufacturing Philosophy

The breadth of this lineup — from a simple $20,000-class strike drone up to a 24-hour-endurance, half-a-tonne-payload persistent platform, all under variations of the same family name — reflects a deliberate design philosophy rather than scattered experimentation. Iran’s drone program has consistently prioritized rapid, low-cost iteration and mass producibility over the kind of individually exquisite engineering that characterizes most Western strike drone programs. Each new variant tends to reuse airframe and production techniques from earlier models while changing propulsion, guidance, or payload to address a specific operational gap identified in prior use — the electric Shahed-101 answering the acoustic-detection problem, the radar-homing Shahed-238 answering the suppression-of-air-defense mission specifically, the larger Shahed-149 answering a demand for longer-endurance persistent strike capability. That iterative, needs-driven production model is arguably as significant to understanding the program’s trajectory as any single variant’s individual specifications.

Why the Family Tree Matters

Treating every Iranian loitering munition as “a Shahed” the way the term gets used casually flattens a genuinely evolving weapons program into a single static threat — which understates both how the design is adapting to counter-measures already fielded against it, and how differently the various roles within the family need to be defended against.
